Power of photography essay

Photographs have been used for over a century now for capturing moments of mankind and things around him, although photography dates back to 4th century B. But since its use, arguments have fired up to know whether photography can reflect the truth, the reality or instead push us away from it. Photography is just another art where an artist puts his thoughts and imaginations on a canvas using his creativity. Hence photography may not show what the reality is, it shows how the photographer sees the world or he wants us to see the world.

Sponsor This Essay I believe in the power of photography. I believe that it is a way to communicate that defies all barriers. Anyone can appreciate and understand photography. It is a way to tell stories and teach history, it is a form of self-expression, it provides visual pleasure, and it is artistic.

Photography connects people to their families and to others all over the world. Photography is an excellent way for me to communicate with people different from myself.

I can communicate with people who speak different languages, people who have different world views, and people from different cultures, all through a photograph. In when I visited eastern Africa with my mother and grandmother we visited many villages where we did not share a common language.

One way I related with the people whom I met was to show them photographs of themselves. The first time that I realized that I could connect with them in this way was when our jeep broke down on an old country road. A group of children ran up to us, after giving them some candy, I decided to photograph them.

After taking the photo I showed them the image on my cameras monitor; the children thought it was amazing, they smiled and laughed and they were astounded to see themselves and their friends.

Even though we did not speak the same language or come from the same background, through my camera I had the chance to bond with them. Ever since the invention of the camera people have been documenting historical events through photography. Through photographs of the events you can more accurately capture the emotions of the people involved in the events than through written documentation.

I know about the impact of photography because I can remember the time when I first saw the photograph of the little naked Vietnamese girl running during the fall of Saigon. The terrified look on the little girls face and the chaos of her surroundings left such an impression on me, that it is now what I associate with the Vietnam War.

I can imagine that this photograph resonates with people of any age or nationality. Photography has taught me a lot about my family and my heritage.

Most of my life I have lived in New Orleans while all of my family has lived in California and Connecticut. When I was a toddler my mother gave me photos of my family members so that I could learn about everyone. Now I look at family photos to reminisce and think about past shared experiences. My mother has a set of photos of my great great grandparents, a few years ago she taught me who all of the people in the pictures were so that when I visited my great grandmother I could talk to her about her parents and grandparents.
